My nephew is graduating high school this spring and the following is my contribution to his “Tribute Page”.
Luke:
I see where you are preparing to graduate this Spring and Penny and I wanted to offer our Congratulations on a stellar job of excelling at High School despite all the obstacles life has thrown in your path.
The Senior Prom and Senior Skip Day are just two of the observed ceremonies that you missed out on this year because of the Pandemic. Its not fair, but at least you didn’t have to fret endlessly about who you were going to take to the Prom, and what to wear. I don’t know whether they are offering a virtual graduation at your school this year. And if so, would a tuxedo Tee-Shirt and sweatpants be an appropriate dress? I just don’t know. I’d check with your Mom.
You are going to decide which college to attend in the fall. Things like do they offer a program in a field of study that you are interested in is important, are they doing on-line classes only, or do they also offer the campus experience? Geography, weather, amenities, housing, and how far away from Houston are they located? When in doubt, listen to your Mom.
Wherever you go, eventually they will ask you to declare a major. Tell them “General Studies”. Hot chicks use the first two years of college to cull the herd. Their heads tell them to marry a doctor or a lawyer, but their hearts often say artist/musician. So for two years you can be pre-law with a minor in Art Appreciation when anyone asks and that will keep you in the running well into your Junior year.
Eventually you’ll graduate with a degree. You will be an adult. The world will be your oyster. You will have opportunities to travel, create new experiences, and expand your world. We will miss you during this time but maybe by then I’ll have mastered FaceBook and can at least keep up. If not, I can always check with your Mom.
Here’s wishing you all the Best. May you have fair winds and following seas wherever the wind may blow.
